Motorists can now breathe a sigh of relief after Moja ExpressWay company announced that it would be accepting toll payments made via mobile money from January 2023. Moja Expressway company is the company that runs the 27 Kilometer road from James Gichuru Road in Westland culminating at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The announcement that M-Pesa will officially be availed as a payment option on the Nairobi Expressway was made by the Company’s C.E.O. (pictured below) during its Annual General Meeting on Thursday.

Express Way Toll
The road was constructed under a Private-Public Partnership and as such, the Private entity has to collect toll to recuperate their investment. Motorists have been paying the toll by cash only with those having ETC cards having the toll automatically deducted from their cards.
This has elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans with some welcoming the move saying that it was long overdue while others say it is a bad move. Some of those opposed to it have stated that this will cause confusion and long queues at the exit points defeating the purpose of having the road. They compare it to the mess witnessed at supermarkets brought about by some of the shoppers paying via M-Pesa. Some have even proposed that there be a specific counter for those using Mobile Money.
During the AGM attended by Eng. Joseph Mbugua, PS of the State Department for Roads under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, several employees were awarded. Mlolongo Toll station was also awarded as the best toll station.
