The Nairobi Express Way will from today 30th July 2022 from 9:00 p.m. be unavailable for motorists.
This comes as Umoja Expressway Company, the Company managing the multi-billion infrastructure, issued a statement stating that the closure will be due to the trial period lapse.
“The trial period for the Nairobi Expressway, which commenced on May 14, 2022, has come to an end. The road will now be officially closed from 9 pm this Saturday, July 30, 2022, until it is officially commissioned. The Moja Expressway company regrets any inconvenience caused and motorists will be advised upon resumption of service on the expressway.” read the statement issued by Umoja Expressway Company.
The Expressway is a 27 Kilometer road that runs from James Gichuru Road in Westland culminating at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. It is a one-of-a-kind infrastructure project in Kenya albeit marred by controversy right from the construction and even the management with a section of its users pleading for a mobile money payment of the road toll.
For the period that it has been open to motorists, accidents have been witnessed at entry and exit points leading to some deaths and injuries. Measures such as speed limits on the road have been put in place and have been strictly enforced.
With the end of the trial, the Company now has an opportunity to come up with improvements from the flaws that have been noted and motorists have an expectation that once it is officially launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta, they will have a smooth experience on the road.
