The Government through the Ministries of Transport and Interior yesterday launched a road safety initiative targeting the reduction of accidents during the festive season. The initiative involves a crackdown on various traffic offences such as drunk driving, speeding, over-loading, and delayed removal of stalled vehicles among others.
In a joint press conference held by the Transport and Interior Cabinet Secretaries; Kipchumba Murkomen and Kithure Kindiki respectively, it was stated that enforcement of traffic rules during the just-launched nationwide operation will be ruthless.
The initiative also comes in the midst of the festive season; a period when some public service vehicle operators are in the rush to make a kill as people travel upcountry. This frenzy is also joined by private motorists who use their private vehicles to illegally ferry passengers. During this season, vehicle owners and operators will want to cash in on the high number of people travelling upcountry and in other places. This leads to vices such as overloading of goods & passengers, contravention of Road Service Licenses, speeding to make more trips, and working long hours without sleep which all lead to deadly road accidents. It is also the period when fare prices are doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled.
Crackdown on illicit Brew
CS Kindiki also directed National Government Administration Officers to intensify the crackdown on the production, sale and consumption of illicit alcohol that is linked to traffic accidents, sexual abuse, and violence against minors. He also reiterated that the ministry was prepared to support security agencies with the necessary support to enhance the safety of every Kenyan on the road.
We at spaceyamagari.com urge all travellers to take all necessary measures to enhance their safety on the road even as the Govrnment starts the crackdown. As a driver, be mindful of all other road users. Speak up against reckless driving. BE SAFE!
