The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recently issued a simple step-by-step guide for motorists to follow in applying for the New Generation Number Plates.

  4. After selecting the vehicle, you will be prompted to select the preferred method of receiving communication from NTSA regarding the status of the new number plate application; that is either SMS or email.
  5. You will then be required to choose your number plate and required format. (either square or oblong.)
  6. Next, you will be required to upload in PDF format, the original logbooks and old plates, both front and rear.
  7. You will then be required to select the collection centre and enter the National Identification Number (ID) of the person who will collect the new digital number plate.
  8. After selecting the collection centre, you will be prompted to pay Ksh3,050 for the number plates.
  9. Once all the above have been successfully completed, NTSA will communicate to you via the communication method that you opted for, when your number plates will be ready.
NTSA Number Plates guide

NTSA in a series of questions asked by netizens clarified that motorists would get the new generation number plates within seven (7) days of application.

NTSA Digital Number Plates

NTSA together with the Ministries of Transport and Internal Security was keen on introducing these new Generation Digital number plates to curb the rising cases of insecurity and car theft. Motorists have three years from October 2022 to have the new generation number plates although there is a pending case in court over the same.

The new plates are linked to the vehicle chassis number with several inbuilt security features that are easily identifiable to law enforcement and comply with international standards. This is aimed at enhancing security by disabling the element of duplication of number plates where vehicles with duplicated number plates are used to commit crimes and even used in terror acts. The plate will be fixed on vehicles at their point of entry, a move that will greatly curb tax evasion.
