The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has now been moved back to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. This follows President William Ruto’s first presidential decree reorganizing his government vide Executive Order No. 1 of 2023 issued on Monday, 9th January 2023.
Before this, the Authority was placed under the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government. The placement of NTSA under the Interior Ministry was a strategic move to have easier coordination of some aspects of the transport sector such as Traffic Police. Traffic Police are drawn from the National Police Service which falls squarely under the Ministry of Interior.
NTSA and the New Generation Digital Number Plates
The previous administration had already drawn the blueprint relating to the launch of the new generation digital number plates. The number plates are linked to the vehicle chassis number with several inbuilt security features that are easily identifiable to law enforcement and comply with international standards.
This required collaboration between the Ministries of Interior and Transport. The number plates are produced by the Kenya Prisons Services under the Ministry of Interior thus seemed easier to have NTSA under the Interior Ministry for easier coordination.
