NTSA Suspends Director General George Njao

The Board of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has given the Director General, Mr. George Njao, a 30-day compulsory leave. NTSA’s board also appointed Mr. Cosmas Ngeso to take up the role in the interim.

This was announced by board chairman Aden Noor Ali in a press briefing where he stated that the move had been taken to allow the Authority look into the worrying trend of increased road crashes and that an ad-hoc committee had been set up to carry out investigations.

NTSA’s board chairman also announced a data cleanup of NTSA’s systems to ensure only legally issued inspection certificates and driving licenses are recognized. Additionally, he outlined that disciplinary action would be taken against any member of staff who issues an inspection certificate/road service license or driving license to any driver or vehicle without following laid down procedures.

Further, NTSA suspended the operating licences of some Public Service Vehicle Saccos whose vehicles have been involved in fatal accidents in the last 30 days. The suspended Saccos include Taita Taveta Sacco was in a self-involved accident along Wundanyi – Mwatate Road on 15th April 2023 leading to 10 fatalities, Tahmeed Sacco also in a self-involved accident along Nakuru – Eldoret Highway on 17th April leading to 4 fatalities. The other two are Team Swat Logistic & Management Limited, and Kyoga Hauliers Kenya Limited whose vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on 19th April 2023 along the Nairobi – Nakuru Highway at Delamere leading to the death of 5 students.
