The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has today announced new fuel prices effective midnight which will be in force from 15th April 2023 to 14th May 2023.
EPRA announced that fuel prices will remain unchanged for the next month, that is April 15 to May 14, 2023. The price of Super Petrol will remain at Sh179.30 while Diesel will sell at Sh162 and Kerosene at Sh145.94 per litre in Nairobi.
“In the period under review, the maximum allowed petroleum pump price of Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene remains unchanged,” EPRA said in the press release. The price of diesel has been cross-subsidized with that of Super Petrol while a subsidy of Ksh. 17.12 /litre has been maintained for Kerosene in order to cushion consumers from the otherwise high prices.
Further, EPRA stated that the prices are inclusive of the 8 % Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2018, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020, and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation. Additionally, the statement outlined that, “The Government will utilise the Petroleum Development Levy to compensate oil marketing companies for the difference in cost.

This comes in the backdrop of the arrival of the first consignment of oil resulting from the government’s oil deal with Saudi Arabia. The ship carrying the first consignment of over 160, 000 metric tonnes of fuel under the Government-Government agreement at the port of Mombasa on Thursday, April 13 with the Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua at hand to receive the fuel.
Kenyans still remain unsure of whether the oil deal with Saudi Arabia will eventually cause a drop in the prices of fuel. The Government has stated that the deal will ease pressure on foreign reserves in the country.
