Isuzu East Africa continues to expand its presence in the Kenyan motoring scene. This is after it won the exclusive rights to distribute UD trucks in the Kenyan market. Previously, UD Trucks were distributed by CMC Motors Group which exited the sale of motor vehicles and announced its new and refocused business strategy focusing on agriculture mechanization last year.
UD model comprises of Tucks and Buses and was previously known as Nissan Diesel which had a significant share in the trucks and buses sector within Kenya. Having made a name for itself, and now being under Isuzu East Africa’s wing, it is expected that the UD trucks and buses will become common on our roads.
Isuzu East Africa is currently the leader in the Kenyan Commercial vehicle segment. Data from the Kenya Motor Vehicle Industry Association (KMI) shows that Isuzu sold 5,968 units in the year ending December 2022, with the Isuzu FRR 90N being the most popular model sold. This figure of 5,968 units was a five percent (5%) increase from 5,609 units in the year ending December 2021.
Isuzu says that it will commence the sales of UD trucks in the second half of this year. Isuzu Managing Director, Rita Kavashe outlined that the Company will offer immediate aftersales support to existing UD trucks customers. The UD trucks will be assembled at the Thika-based Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers (KVM) while Isuzu Trucks will be assembled at Isuzu East Africa’s ultra modern Nairobi plant. The sale of the UD trucks will kick off in Nairobi and Mombasa and subsequently extend to other parts of the country.
Further, Mourad Hedna, President of UD Trucks MEENA (Middle East, East & North Africa Region), expressed confidence in Isuzu East Africa’s ability to deliver exceptional support to UD Trucks customers in Kenya.
