Following the recent rains and floods that have hit the country, several roads across the country have been damaged leading to some being closed and motorists adviced to approach with caution. Below is a list of some of the major roads affected with some being closed while motorists being advised to approach some of the roads with caution.
Mai Mahiu Road
According to the Kenya National Highway Authority, (KENHA) the road was closed after siltation, coupled with heavy debris was deposited on a section stretching over a kilometre at Suswa area, about 27 kilometres from Mai Mahiu town towards Narok. The closure will allow smooth clearance of the siltation and avoid incidents of vehicles getting stuck among other possible dangers. Motorists using the road were adviced to use alternative routes including the main Nairobi – Nakuru Highway.
Garissa – Madogo (A3) Road
KENHA in a statement outlined that floods had overtopped sections of the A3 road at Mororo and Kona Punda area and that after an assessment by its Engineers, the road section was declared not safe for use by motorists and pedestrians. Further, KENHA informed the public that the road section between Garissa and Madogo is CLOSED to all road users until the water levels subside to safe levels and restoration works on damaged sections are completed.
Mugeka – Murang’a (B112) Road
A section of this road from Gathaji Junction to Posta in Murang’a Town was closed due to the collapse of the road embankment across five sections due to floods, causing significant damage to the road infrastructure and posing serious safety risks to motorists and pedestrians. The Authority advised motorists to use this alternative roads: 1. Mugeka – Kaweru Junction – Gakonya – Murang’a route for traffic from Mugeka to Murang’a. 2. Murang’a – Kangema – Kiriani Route for traffic from Murang’a to Kiriaini. 3. Murang’a – Gatiba Junction – Gitugi – Kiriaini route for traffic from Murang’a to Kiriaini.
Lodwar – Lokichar Roads
This road was not closed but motorists were urged to exercise extreme caution when approaching the bridge between Karoge and Kasuroi. A section of the road on the Lokichar side of the bridge was damaged by the floods.
Athi River – Machakos Road
Motorists plying the Athi River – Machakos Road near Green Park estate were urged to exercise caution as the embankment slopes eroded, posing risks to the service road. Further motorists were urged to refrain from using the service road and when using the main carriageway and to proceed with caution.
