The Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) has today temporarily closed the Narok – Mai Mahiu Road. This is after a huge crack was spotted on the road about 6 kilometers from Mai Mahiu town.
Kenha has stated that the cause of the crack has not been established but suspects that it may have been caused by the ongoing rains. Further, the area has had similar incidences due to earth movements.
The Authority has further advised motorists to use alternative routes. In the statement, two routes are listed that is; Narok – Kisiriri – Mau Summit – Njoro turn off (B 18) Road, to join Nakuru and other destinations. The second one is Narok – Bomet – Kaplong (B6) Road to connect to Kaplong – Kericho (B7) Road.
The huge crack runs across the road and a video posted on Twitter by a user named Leakey Lekishon (@Lesilantoi) shows the magnitude of the crack.
This is not the first time that the Narok – Mai Mahiu Highway is experiencing such. Last month, the ongoing heavy rains eroded part of the road. The same has occurred over the past years including in 2018, paralyzing transport for days as in the tweet below by Odhiambo Ogola.
