Following a wild race at Melbourne’s Albert Park, Max Verstappen won his first Formula One Australian Grand Prix.
The Formula One Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2023 was a Formula One motor race that took place on April 2, 2023, at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Max Verstappen took first place, followed by Lewis Hamilton in second and Fernando Alonso in third. With 444,631 attendees, the event set a new attendance record at the circuit for the weekend, making it the most popular sporting event in Melbourne history. The previous top attendance figure was 440,000 at the United States Grand Prix in 2022. With three red flags, the Grand Prix broke the previous record.
The defending champion was the overwhelming favorite going into the race, but the Mercedes team of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton passed the Dutchman on the opening lap. The Mercedes car seemed to put up a good fight during the race up until George Russell had a DNF. Much to the delight of Mercedes Petronas fans Hamilton managed to drive through to P2 putting up a good fight and keeping Alonso behind him.
Prior to Alex Albon’s incident seven circuits later, Charles Leclerc’s gravel beaching had already resulted in a safety car being in place.
Verstappen exerted his authority and established a sizable lead as soon as the race resumed.
After Kevin Magnussen blew out his rear tire, a late-second red flag was raised, leaving two thrilling laps to be completed.
When the race resumed, confusion and collisions broke out, with Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon’s severe collision between Alpine teammates taking a center stage
Sainz’s time at Albert Park was disappointing to come to an end after he spent the whole of the race battling for a podium spot.
The Ferrari driver clipped Alonso on the second red-flag restart, earning him a five-second time penalty from the race officials. The FIA’s ruling was contentious because Alonso had not lost his position and the lap was essentially discarded. The race order was reinstated in accordance with how it had been set before the restart. “No! That is not acceptable. They should wait till the race is over to talk to me about it, Sainz stated over the team radio.
He dropped to P12 as a result of the penalty, and the cars were closely packed as they crossed the finish line. Although things may not have gone as planned, Piastri won’t be grumbling about not earning points in his maiden F1 race in Australia. The Melbourne-born driver drove with maturity to finish in P8 and earn his first championship points after starting in P16. With its twists and turns and unexpected race outcome here are the Australian GP race results;
