So, let us look at the 2023 F1 teams. In the 2023 Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will race the W14, which Mercedes has unveiled. Mercedes first returned to the team’s primarily black livery, much to the fans’ excitement. The car looks sleek with the colors black, white, and monster green blending so well.
The rest of the vehicle, at least as it stands right now, appears to share the same philosophy as the vehicle from 2022, of the zero side pod design but they are not by any means the same because the current ones are a more blocky vertical design. Given that the 2022 zero sidepod concept wasn’t revealed until last year’s first test, it will be interesting to watch whether this changes for the first test.
We also notice the nose of the W14 is much shorter than the one of the W13 which I must say looks really nice. They have completely redesigned the suspension of the car, this was one of the key areas that they needed to change so as to make the zero-side pod design work, we’ll get to understand more about the suspensions when the tests begin.
Ferrari’s SF23 F1 car was unveiled amid great excitement, and as part of the unveiling, Charles Leclerc raced the vehicle at Fiorano a 15km quick demonstration. It appears to be carrying on the design philosophy from the previous year and should be among the grid’s most slick vehicles. Moreover, it is intended to be a more balanced vehicle, giving drivers a constant sensation in both fast and slow corners.
In order to develop its powertrain within the limitations of the engine freeze and provide its performance consistently, Ferrari has been working relentlessly. The car from the previous year had a number of problems that made it necessary to reduce the engine’s performance, also Ferrari struggled with strategies.
The SF-23 follows the aerodynamic template of the 2022 car, the radiator intake and the undercut of the front corner of the side pod have been completely optimized but not completely changed. Ferrari also retained a distinctive scallop shape on the top surface of the side pods. The side pod’s shape is not quite as dramatic as last year, also the lower side protection cone remains fairly high compared to its rivals as last year.
What also stands out is the amount of unpainted carbon fiber on the surfaces to save a few crucial grams of weight. The front wing is different from last year it has now the common full-width slot gap from the front element and the second element. Something on the FERRARI that stirred up debate was, Upon the introduction of their new SF23, the car’s eye-catching front wing was its most distinctive feature. Interestingly, this design is remarkably similar to Mercedes’ contentious front wing from the 2022 US Grand Prix, which the FIA eventually found to have an unfair aerodynamic advantage and banned.
The FIA later revised the design after removing the wing as a precaution. Interestingly, Ferrari’s front wing for the SF23 also has precisely five fins on each side of the wing, indicating a similar strategy to Mercedes. Ferrari stands out since it appears that the rules have changed to include the secondary aerodynamic advantages of the fins. In contrast, the 2022 standards mandated that the front wing’s fins be employed largely for mechanical and structural functions. Ferrari has taken advantage of the removal of this emphasis on the primary purpose of the fins from the 2023 Technical Rules to create a front wing that offers both mechanical and aerodynamic advantages.
In preparation for the start of preseason testing later this month, Mercedes has also created a similar design for their 2023 vehicle. Although teams continue to test the limits of what is permitted by the regulations, the addition of these fins is certain to cause controversy among motorsport enthusiasts and specialists alike.
Rival teams in 2022, including Ferrari and Red Bull, claimed that Mercedes had unfairly benefited from an aerodynamic advantage by adding five fins to both sides of the front wing and securing the top two flaps.
On to ORACLE REDBULL RACING who are defending both the drivers and constructors title, the two major announcements that were made on the day of the launch were; Ford was introduced as Oracle Red Bull Racing’s new strategic partner as the team unveiled its new world champion car for the 2023 F1 season in New York.
No major changes were made to the RB 19 as they built it on the foundation of the 2022 car, “The new RB19 builds on the strengths of our previous world champion car. We incorporated everything we learned from the RB18.” Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Manager, Christian Horner
