The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced fuel prices for the period between July 15 to August 14, 2024. In its latest review, EPRA has marginally reduced the prices of Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene by KES. 1, KES. 1.50 and KES. 1.30 respectively.

EPRA's press statement

“Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Kshs.188.84, Kshs.171.60 and Kshs.161.75 respectively in Nairobi starting midnight. The prices are inclusive of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020″ read part of the statement.

EPRA and Road Maintenance Levy

Upon issuing the statement on th fuel prices, Kenyans note that the proposed increase of the Road Maintenance Levy from KES. 18 to KES. 25 had been implemented on Super Petrol and Diesel. This is despite the recently concluded public participation on the same where the said increase was overwhelmingly opposed.

Government bloggers have come to the defence of the Government stating that despite the increase in the Road Maintenance Levy, the price of fuel has reduced. However, Kenyans are having none of it.

Public Affairs Journalist at Citizen Tv, Sam Gituku on X (formerly Twitter) posted; “Petroleum taxes & levies now at highest at 88.9% of landed costs. @EPRA raises fuel levy from KSh. 18 to 25 despite recent promise by fmr. CS Murkomen to keep it at Sh. 18. Notice the landed cost of super petrol reduced to Sh. 92.97 from previous 100.3. price benefit swallowed by fuel levy raise.” He further posted the photos below from EPRA’s statement for comparison.

This move has angered Kenyans stating that the fuel prices would have been lower by about KES. 7, were it not for the increase in the levy. Some have threatedned to stage protests against this increase. It remains to be seen what happens next amidst the ongoing tension following the successful anti-tax riots which have now morphed into accountability seeking riots.
