The government has today 3rd February, 2026 unveiled green number plates for electric vehicles. The number plates were unveiled by Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir on Tuesday at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, (KICC) during the launch of the launch of the National e-Mobility Policy.

The Cabinet Secretary outlined that the change takes effect immediately to promote cleaner transport, cut carbon emissions, and support the goal of 32% greenhouse gas reduction by 2030. Electric Vehicle registrations have grown from 4,000 in 2023 to over 24,000 by 2025, mostly motorcycles, with the government targeting 5% penetration in new sales amid expanding charging networks.
The plates have a white reflective background with green lettering.

Mr. Chirchir urged owners of already registered electric vehicles and motorcycles to progressively replace their old number plates and get the newly launched ones.
Kenyans Reaction to the New Electric Vehicles Number Plates
Some Kenyans however describe the plates as being ugly and even did a redesign suggesting that the background should be green with white letters.

Most netizens however took issue with the number plates asking if they came with any incentives such as tax reliefs for electric cars and motor cycles, citing that in developed and serious countries, there are tax incentives attached to e-mobility.
The State Department of Transport outlined that the newly launched National e-Mobility Policypolicy sets the foundation for a cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable transport future, one aligned with Kenya’s climate and economic ambitions.

Further, the e-Mobility Policy is designed to be a catalyst enabling the growth and widespread adoption of electric vehicles. It supports a strong ecosystem that delivers cleaner air, lower transport costs, support industrialization, and better outcomes for households and businesses.

the launch of green plates is pointless tbh – feels more like copying other countries and no tangible gains – the whole EV thing isnt being done with order or finesse just doing it for the sake – kenya has wastes too much power at night – kenya power could benefit by selling it to evs ,most riders have reported more cash in their pockets by using evs . the list is endless but yeah lets start with green plates
