Chery Automobile to Build a $20M Electric Vehicle Assembly Plant in Kenya in Partnership with Kenyan Firm

Chery International, a Chinese Automaker has today signed a deal with Kenyan firm Afrigreen Automobile which will see the construction of an assembly plant to produce electric vehicles (EVs) in Kenya. The event held at Nairobi Serena Hotel was attended by Prominent Government Officials as well as a high-level delegation from China.

During the event, Mr. Abubakar Hassan Abubakar, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, noted that Electric Mobility is a priority investment area in the transport sector because of its market potential and ability to mitigate climate change.

He added the 20 Million Dollar Investment in the proposed Electric Vehicle Assembly Plant will have the potential of creating employment of approximately 3000 direct jobs and thousands of other indirect jobs. Further, he stated that the partnership between the two firms is expected to boost the uptake of EVs in Kenya by making them more affordable and accessible to the common citizen.

Chery International through its Central Africa Region Director, explained that the reason why the firm chose to establish the assembly plant in Kenya was due to its skilled workforce and the strategic position that Kenya holds as an economic hub in the continent.

It is said that the assembly plant should be operational in the next one month and that it has a capacity to produce between 5000 and 6000 Electric Vehicles annually. The firms will begin production of the Omoda sport utility model before embarking on the production of pickups next year.
