Car paintwork is among the most important aspects of any vehicle. It is the first thing you notice when looking at a car therefore it can make or break the overall look of the car. Car paint is used to protect the exterior of a car as well as to improve the look of a car.

Elements of a Car Paint

Car paint is made by combining 4 elements i.e thinner, binder, additives, and pigment.

  • Binder: Provides a binding effect that holds the pigments and forms a dry film that enhances the quality and provides better gluing to the car paint. This maintains the glossy effect and resistance to fade on the car’s body.
  • Pigment: Give color and hide irregular properties on the car’s body. There are two varieties of pigments i.e prime pigment (enhances color and opacity) and extender pigment ( improves adhesion).
  • Additives: Thicken and provide density to the car paint.

Solvents are added to mix the paint and binder together to form the correct consistency. You can use chemical solvents or water as a solvent.

Solvent-borne paint has chemical solvents eg enamel. Solvent-borne paint is expensive, durable, and has a great ability to prevent rusting over a long period however, it’s much more harmful to the environment and isn’t widely used. Waterborne paint contains water as a solvent which is cheaper as compared to solvent-borne paint and is environmentally friendly.

Car paint is made up of a basecoat, color coat, and a clearcoat, which are all designed to provide protection and a great finish. The base coat is applied first, followed by the color coat, and lastly the clearcoat. The color coat provides the car’s color while the clearcoat provides a glossy finish and protection against scratches, UV rays, and other environmental elements.

For your car paint finish to have a long-lasting effect, protect and maintain it. Here are some tips that ensure your car paint lasts longer

Types of Car Paint Finishes

  1. Metallic paint- This adds a metallic shine to the car’s surface as a result of aluminum powder components. It effectively covers the damage done to the car and lasts longer. On the downside, this type of car paint finish has few color options, is costly and it’s difficult to find a match that fits your car’s color.
  2. Peerless paint- Contains ceramic crystals which refract and reflect light. Peerless car paint finishes are glamorous and different from other options of car paint, last longer, and have high-quality performance. It’s expensive to fix however, once fixed they are easier to maintain.
  3. Matte paint- It’s rare as it is hard to apply, is expensive and has very few color options i.e black, gray, and silver. Matte surfaces absorb light and give a dull sheen.
  4. Solid paint- Widely used on most cars. It’s easy to apply, match and repair thus it’s widely spread and has many color options.
